Working in the mental health industry, as in most of the healthcare system, can be tiresome and takes great dedication. Dedication from not only the service providers, but also the many people that make up the safety net that keeps facilities such as the William R. Sharpe Jr. Hospital moving forward. Sharpe Hospital offers a range of mental health services to patients that are committed either through a civil process or the criminal justice system. Either way, being admitted and the stay at any mental health facility is a very difficult process to deal with for those with mental health needs and their friends and families. The people that continually work to ensure the safety and well being of these patients deserve great credit, those that do it without pay, should be especially recognized. The facility, staff and volunteers of Sharpe Hospital, formally the Weston Hospital, have assisted thousands of patients within our region, and affecting the lives of many more.
The familiar amenities you find in a regional medical hospital can also be found at Sharpe, including a gift shop, cafeteria and even an auxiliary group made up of volunteers that assist the hospital staff in creating a safe and warm environment for patients and families alike. Ruth Macbeth is part of The Friends Auxiliary and spends countless hours at Sharpe Hospital in service to the staff, patients and their families. After working as a Health Service Worker at Weston State Hospital and eventually retiring from the newer Sharpe facility, Ruth continues to spend her time working in the hospital in various forms. “She became a volunteer so that she could continue to serve individuals impacted by mental health disorders and to be a positive role model to many,” stated Krista Adkins, the Volunteer Coordinator at Sharpe.
Ruth Macbeth has held numerous board positions with The Friends Auxiliary and continually works to ensure that there is funding available to sustain the numerous patient activities at the facility including special events throughout the year. The goal of the volunteers is to make patients and family members comfortable with their stay at the hospital. One of the most exciting projects Ruth has spearheaded is the birthday bag program, which ensures that the patients not only have their birthdays remembered, but they are also made to feel extra special on that date. Her hard work is instrumental to keeping the program up and running now and in the future. Her service to not only the hospital, but to those within her community are why Ruth Macbeth was selected as this month’s Celebrating Volunteer winner.
“It is so important to have folks like Ruth as volunteers,” said Adkins. “Ruth, and others like her, donate time doing simple tasks that leave lasting impressions.”
“Ruth Macbeth is a wonderful asset to the Sharpe Hospital volunteer program. Her hard work and dedication to those that receive treatment at the facility will leave a lasting impact on their lives.” Gretchen Ross of WBOY stated. “Her life long dedication to the mental health of our fellow West Virginians can best be appreciated by looking at the lives she has positively impacted. I am honored to recognize her and celebrate her work as a volunteer.”
“To see the long hours that Ruth volunteers at Sharpe shows the dedication she has to the patients and staff at that facility.” said Tim Miley, owner of The Miley Legal Group. “I am always awestruck at the work ethic I see in volunteers throughout our region, and Ruth is no different. Her work at the hospital will not only leave a lasting impression on the patients there, but on anyone else she comes in contact with.”
“Ruth is a special lady and Sharpe Hospital has been blessed to have a crew of volunteer such as her. She is a living example of the best that humanity has to offer,” stated Adkins.
