Citizen’s Spotlight: Melissa Matheny, Wife, Mother, Business Professional & Bridgeport City Counsel Member

Miley Legal Group

Name: Melissa Matheny

Age: 28

Family: Husband, Robert and 4 sons (Robert II, Joseph, Joshua, & Dominick)

Hobbies: I love to sing, but being so busy, my family is the most important “hobby” I have right now.

What qualities of your mother/father influenced you the most? Their spirituality. I was raised by Godly parents, who took me to church every week, most of the time more than once a week. They taught me how important it was to have a personal relationship with God and instilled in me a deep sense of morals, integrity, compassion, and the importance of family. I’m grateful for that!

What is the best piece of advice you ever got? Not to listen to everyone’s advice!

What one person do you respect and admire most and why? My husband Robert because I have never met a man like him. He has been through some hard times, but never gave up. Most importantly, he always puts his family first.  There isn’t a greater father on the planet. Our boys are soooo blessed!

What is your profession and current office? I am the Business Development Leader for Summit Engineering, Inc.’s WV offices, and I’m a member of the Bridgeport City Council.

What is the most difficult part of being a Council Member? Knowing that no matter how long or hard I agonize over an issue or decision for the city, there will always be someone that will not be happy with my decision or with me for that matter.

What is one of the biggest issues you see facing Bridgeport? Bridgeport is growing and expanding. Change is inevitable but can sometimes be hard to digest. We, as a community, need to continue to focus on that balance between embracing the “New” while not forsaking the “Old”.

What is the one thing that people misunderstand about you the most? That when citizens approach me with input, opinions and concerns, I really DO listen and want to hear what they have to say.

Is there anything else you would want to add? It is an honor to serve such an incredible community, and I take the position very seriously. I won’t make promises that I can’t follow through with, but what I can promise is that I am always here to listen to the citizens of Bridgeport.  I will take everything said to heart and make decisions for the city based on those suggestions, and what I feel in my heart is best for the community at large.
