Thousands of children are treated in emergency rooms each year for crib-related injuries, according to a 2011 study in the journal Pediatrics. As a parent or caregiver, there are certain precautions you can take to ensure your child’s safety and help prevent these types of accidents. These tips explain how to choose a safe crib for your child.

How to Buy a Crib That is Safe

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends the following crib-safety tips for parents and caregivers.

  1. Check the labeling of the crib and mattress and make sure it meets Federal safety regulations and industry voluntary standards (ASTM).
  2. Use a mattress that fits very snugly. You should not be able to fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the side of the crib.
  3. Ensure the corner posts do not extend more than 1/16 inch above the top of the end panel on the crib. (Children’s clothes can get caught on them, posing a strangulation hazard.)
  4. Check the mattress support hooks for stability. They should be safely secured by bolts or closed hooks.
  5. Check the hardware on your crib regularly to ensure its securely tightened.
  6. If you use a bumper pad, use one that snaps on or, if you use a tie-on model, cut off any excess string after you tie it into place.
  7. Remove the bumper pad when your child is able to pull herself into a standing position. Children can use it to try to climb out of the crib, increasing the risk of falling.
  8. Do not select a crib with a headboard or footboard cut-out design that could allow a child’s head to get stuck.
  9. Don’t position a crib next to window blinds or drapes.
  10. If possible, don’t buy or borrow a used crib. If you are using a hand-me-down crib from one of your older children, make sure the crib is in good repair (tight hardware, secure slats, etc.) before using it for your new baby.
